Things to Look Forward to in Steamboat Winter 2026/27

Winter in Steamboat Springs is about more than skiing. It’s fresh snow on the mountains, quiet mornings in the backcountry, live music downtown, and a community that knows how to celebrate the season.

With the 2026–27 winter season approaching, there’s plenty to look forward to. From longtime Steamboat traditions to unforgettable adventures beyond the ski slopes, here’s what’s coming to Ski Town, U.S.A. this winter.

1. The Return of Ski Season

Steamboat Resort Opening Day: November 21, 2026

Few things get Steamboat excited quite like the first chairlift of the season.

Steamboat Ski Resort is scheduled to open November 21, kicking off another winter of skiing and snowboarding on Mount Werner. Opening Day festivities bring locals and visitors together to celebrate the return of winter, complete with music, mountain traditions, and the excitement of getting back on snow.

Known for its legendary Champagne Powder® snow and beautiful gladed terrain, Steamboat offers something for everyone, from first-time skiers to experienced powder enthusiasts.

And while the ski mountain draws plenty of attention, there’s another side of Steamboat waiting to be explored beyond the resort boundaries.

2. Snowmobile Adventures in Colorado’s Backcountry

There’s something special about getting away from the crowds and experiencing winter in the mountains at your own pace.

Snowmobiling offers an entirely different perspective of Northwest Colorado. Snow-covered meadows, towering evergreens, and expansive mountain views create the kind of scenery you don’t always find from a chairlift.

At Colorado Sled Rentals, visitors can choose from several winter experiences depending on their skill level and sense of adventure.

For riders who prefer to explore independently, CSR offers full-day and multi-day Polaris snowmobile rentals. Choose from entry-level machines for riders who know the basics, versatile mountain sleds, and high-performance models built for advanced riders. Rentals are not ride-from-shop: bring a vehicle that can tow and rent or bring a trailer, or add sled delivery to the trailhead.

Scenic Guided Trail Tours

For a more relaxed experience, Rabbit Ears Adventures offers guided two- and three-hour snowmobile tours across a beautiful private ranch in Northwest Colorado. These scenic, on-trail experiences are especially popular with families, first-time riders, and groups looking to enjoy winter together.

The 2026–27 snowmobile season is scheduled for December 15 through April 15, weather permitting.

3. Holiday Celebrations in the Mountains

December 2026

Steamboat takes on a different atmosphere during the holidays. Snow-covered storefronts, decorated streets, and mountain celebrations make December an especially memorable time to visit.

This year’s scheduled festivities include:

  • December 5: Holiday Balloon Glow at Steamboat Resort, featuring illuminated hot air balloons at the mountain base. This outdoor event is weather dependent.
  • December 19: Santa Saddles Up, a Steamboat tradition featuring Santa arriving on horseback.
  • December 31: New Year’s Eve Light Up Snow Cat Parade and Fireworks at the resort.

Between holiday shopping downtown, dinner at a local restaurant, and evenings watching the mountain light up, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the holiday season.

For visitors spending Christmas or New Year’s in Steamboat, it’s worth planning outdoor adventures early. Holiday weeks are among the busiest periods of the winter season.

4. MusicFest and the Cowboy Downhill

January 2027

January brings two of Steamboat’s most recognizable winter celebrations.

The MusicFest at Steamboat | January 5–10

The MusicFest brings six days of live country, Americana, and roots music to venues throughout Steamboat Springs.

It’s a unique combination of mountain recreation and live entertainment, with performances ranging from intimate acoustic sets to lively evening concerts.

Cowboy Downhill | January 18

The 52nd Annual Cowboy Downhill returns to Steamboat Resort on January 18, 2027.

This one-of-a-kind event brings professional rodeo cowboys to the ski slopes for an entertaining combination of skiing, racing, and Western tradition.

It’s one of those events that captures Steamboat’s personality perfectly: a little competitive, a little unusual, and unmistakably Colorado.

5. The 114th Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival

February 2–7, 2027

Few events represent Steamboat’s history quite like the annual Winter Carnival.

First celebrated in 1914, the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival celebrates the community’s longstanding connection to winter sports and Western heritage.

The festivities traditionally feature ski racing, jumping competitions, the famous street events along Lincoln Avenue, and an unforgettable nighttime celebration at Howelsen Hill.

For visitors looking to experience more than the typical ski vacation, Winter Carnival offers a look into the culture that makes Steamboat special.

The 2027 celebration is scheduled for February 2–7. The detailed schedule is expected to be published in December 2026.

6. Exploring Winter Beyond the Ski Slopes

Not every memorable winter day needs to involve a lift ticket.

Steamboat and the surrounding Yampa Valley offer countless ways to enjoy the outdoors at a slower pace.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

Few things feel better after a cold day outside than soaking in naturally heated mineral pools surrounded by snow-covered forest. Strawberry Park Hot Springs remains one of Steamboat’s signature winter experiences. From November 1 through May 1, Routt County requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with snow tires and/or chains for access; review the current requirements before visiting.

Howelsen Hill

Located near downtown, Howelsen Hill is Colorado’s oldest continuously operated ski area, dating to 1915. Visitors can experience a different side of skiing while appreciating the town’s remarkable Olympic heritage.

Snowshoeing and Nordic Skiing

For those looking to explore the winter landscape without a motor, Steamboat offers groomed Nordic trails and scenic snowshoeing opportunities throughout the surrounding area.

Downtown Steamboat

Sometimes the best way to spend a winter afternoon is simply walking Lincoln Avenue, exploring local shops, stopping for coffee, or finding a good spot for dinner.

Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or planning a quieter mountain getaway, there’s plenty to enjoy away from the ski resort.

7. WinterWonderGrass Returns to Steamboat

March 5–7, 2027

As the days begin to get longer, Steamboat’s winter music scene continues with the return of WinterWonderGrass.

The 2027 festival celebrates a decade in Steamboat, bringing bluegrass, Americana, and roots music together for three days of live performances and mountain culture.

With 27 bands scheduled across four stages, WinterWonderGrass has become a favorite event for both locals and visitors.

March can also be a fantastic time to get outside. Longer daylight hours create more opportunities to explore the mountains, enjoy winter scenery, and make the most of the remaining snow season.

8. Spring Skiing and the Final Weeks of Winter

April 2027

Winter doesn’t disappear overnight in Steamboat.

April brings spring skiing, longer afternoons, and some of the season’s most entertaining traditions.

Steamboat Resort has scheduled its Cardboard Classic for April 10 and Splashdown Pond Skim for April 11, two events known for creative costumes, unusual homemade sleds, and plenty of laughs.

For snowmobilers, the later season can still offer opportunities to explore the high country when snowpack and conditions allow.

It’s a final chance to enjoy the mountains before the valley begins its transition into spring.
